Preconception Care & Fertility Enhancement
For more than 30 years I have had the great privilege of assisting couples to prepare for pregnancy and birth and creating their own family. Some had been struggling with specific fertility issues, “unexplained infertility”, unsuccessful IVF treatments and pregnancy loss.
Now I would love to help you optimize your fertility, increase your chances of conceiving when you are ready, having a healthy pregnancy and a healthy, happy baby.
What is Preconception Health Care?
The basis of the naturopathic preconception health care and fertility support programs that I offer is to ensure optimum health for both partners before conception.
As the foundations of most organs are laid down within the first hours and days after conception, the goal is to create and develop the healthiest and most viable sperm and ova possible, increasing the likelihood that conception will occur easily, ensuring the healthy development of the embryo, a healthy pregnancy, a good birth experience and ultimately a healthy baby and adult. Medical research shows beneficial effects of preconception care beyond just the pregnancy and birth but also shows a significant effect on future generations.
With conscious preparation prior to conception you not only increase your chances of becoming pregnant when you are ready but you will also be reducing the risk of miscarriage, pregnancy complications and passing on the predisposition to any allergy, familial health issues, developmental or learning difficulties.
Very simply, preconception health care involves
- ensuring that everything , all nutrients and the healthiest environment possible that is required for the health and development of sperm, ova, pregnancy and your baby’s development is present and adequate before conception and
- ensuring that anything that could be harmful or in any way detrimental, such as environmental toxins and stressors, are not present and well cleared from your body prior to a conception attempt.
Preconception health care and conscious conception thus ensures the ideal environment for your baby growth and development from the time of conception.
Who can benefit?
Anyone considering a pregnancy will benefit from undertaking a preconception health care program such as couples who do not have any problems with fertility but would like to improve general health, have a trouble free pregnancy, delivery, and breastfeeding experience and to give their child the healthiest possible start to life or couples who are taking longer than expected to conceive &/or experiencing difficulties with fertility. A preconception health care program will also assist in reducing the likelihood of passing on allergies or other health problems to children where there is a family history of these.
Even those already using ART (Assisted Reproductive Treatments) such as IVF will benefit. Recent studies have shown preconception health care will more than double your chances of success when using these methods.
What is involved?
Each couple’s situation, health and specific requirements will be unique and are assessed individually.
Assessment includes a detailed medical history, thorough assessment of lifestyle, occupational & environmental issues, diet and nutritional status, overall health and specifically reproductive health. Assessment may specifically require general blood tests, testing for specific nutrients, screening for infections or environmental toxins, semen analysis and symptom-thermal menstrual charting.
Treatment will then be focused on correcting the underlying causes of any fertility issues and creating the healthiest possible environment in which your baby will grow and develop.
Treatments focus on optimizing the health and environment of both you and your partner in order for your baby to be conceived and to grow in a clean, unpolluted and nutritionally rich environment. These will include individualized dietary recommendations and any required nutritional supplementation, education and support regarding any lifestyle and environmental changes required, stress management and individualized herbal formulations where indicated.
A preparation period of four months is ideal as it takes around 110 to 120 days for sperm and ova to develop and mature.
A healthy body will be a fertile body which produces a healthy baby.
